Jaxon grabbed the bracelets from the high priestess and headed over to me.
“Stay away from me!” My shrill voice must have activated the magic inside me.
Suddenly the stapler, tape dispenser, some papers, and a small statue of Hecate all lifted off the desk and hovered in midair. The high priestess glared at me as if she thought I was doing it on purpose. Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew I wanted to get the fuck out of here.
Jaxon gave me a somber look. “I don’t have a choice. I’m sorry,” he grumbled.
“Do it,” the high priestess hissed, her voice louder and angrier.
“Abigail,” Professor Eastey pleaded. “Surely this really isn’t necessary.”
“Stay out of this, Augustus,” the high priestess warned.
Jaxon glanced over his shoulder and then focused his attention back on me. “Are you going to let me put these damn things on you?”
I shook my head and gritted my teeth. “Never.”
“You know it won’t do any good to disobey me—I’m a vampire.”
“Please, Jaxon,” I begged. “Don’t—”
He turned into a blur and attacked me. Cold metal slammed onto one wrist, then the other. It broke my concentration and the floating objects crashed onto the hardwood floor. The statue shattered into a million pieces.
Instantly, burning pain raced through my veins like a red-hot needle, stabbing every organ, every muscle. My skin prickled with heat and blistered like I had been sunburned. Smoke and steam came off me as if my whole body was on fire.
Unbearable agony gripped me, and I fell to my knees, panting. I gasped and clutched at my chest.
Something inside me pushed hard against my ribs.
Something that was angry.
Something that wanted revenge.
